The Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education (Social Studies Concentration) is a degree completion program designed to provide students the opportunity to earn a four-year degree and initial teacher licensure through The Citadel’s evening programs. It is the only evening degree completion program for secondary education in social studies available in the Lowcountry. Graduates who successfully complete the program and meet all requirements are eligible for initial teacher certification in South Carolina. Highly qualified social studies teachers are in great demand, making this program a valuable path for aspiring educators.

The B.S. Secondary Education (6-12) Online Program at Chaminade University of Honolulu aims to prepare students to become effective and impactful teachers in grades 6 through 12. The program emphasizes the importance of building positive relationships with students, fostering their growth and development. Coursework focuses on providing students with the educational foundation needed to create thriving learning environments. Upon completion, graduates will be licensed to teach grades 6-12 in their chosen content area (English, Mathematics, Science, or Social Studies) in Hawaii and most other states. The program incorporates hands-on learning experiences, with student teaching opportunities available in the student's area. Students learn to apply knowledge of learner development, diverse students, and the learning environment, to utilize formative and summative assessments, and to analyze the history, values, and ethics of the teaching profession. The program integrates the Marianist tradition of providing an integral, quality education within diverse learning communities.

The Secondary education degree prepares you to teach in secondary settings with eligibility for teaching licensure for grades 6-12 upon completion in your chosen subject area. In your education courses and applied practical experiences you will learn the best practices of teaching middle and high school students while gaining a deep understanding of effective classroom management. You will expand your knowledge in a specific content area by earning a concurrent major and completing coursework in the UW College of Arts and Sciences, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources or College Engineering and Applied Science. Starting early in your academic career, you will spend a large portion of your time in classrooms honing your craft. Your experience will culminate when you are paired with an encouraging and supportive mentor teacher in your subject area to complete your student teaching residency. Upon completion of the program, you will be prepared to become a teacher in Wyoming and across the country.
